Life after high school. I served three years in the Navy. While in the Navy, I was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska for 15 months where on Good Friday in 1964 I was in the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America, 9.2 on the Richter Scale, and lasting for almost 5 minutes. I was working in the air traffic control tower 192 feet above runway level.Quite a memory. From San Diego, to Georgia, to Alaska, back to Georgia and then on to Spain, France, Italy, Turkey and Greece while serving on the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal. The French Riviera over Christmas 1964 was very special. I played on two Navy Allstar basketball teams, late bloomer I guess! Just prior to my Navy discharge I was offered Navy Prep School, then four years at the Naval Academy. After the Academy there was a five year commitment. I would be thirty at the end of my commitment. I knew I wanted a family and a stable life. It was a hard decision to turn down this incredible offer, Aileen and I met in college at Kent State University during the turbulent 60's. I lettered in soccer at Kent State. We have been married since June 17,1967. From Kent State to New Jersey, where Aileen and I were married, to Cleveland (Oberlin) where I worked as an Air Traffic Controller/Training Instructor for eleven years. Eleven years and four kids later, a BA for me earned at Baldwin-Wallace College (distinguished graduate), a Masters in Ed earned by Aileen, we moved on to Colorado. I was an Air Traffic Controller/Supervisor/Manager at the Denver Air Route Traffic Control Center in Longmont for 24 more years retiring in June 2002.
